or Salon Colour - The Pros & Cons :
The choice is yours.
MasterClass present the Advantages & Disadvantages of
each route to hair colour so you know what to expect.
Home
Colour Kits :
There are a wide range
of these available, some from companies who also produce
colour products for hair salons. There are a number of
reasons why these kits have gained popularity. They are
now available at a wide range of retail outlets including
chemists and supermarkets. They have received
conciderable publicity, including from some high profile
TV celebrities. There has also been a rise in court cases
against the manufacturers of these kits.
What is in
a Home Colour Kit :
A typical kit contains
a hair colourant or bleaching agent together with a
peroxide to mix with the colour or bleach before
application. The peroxide is similar to those used in
salons but the colour product is usually very different.
Some contain colour products which are made from natural
substances, are ammonia free while others contain strong
metallic salts. Colour kits also contain instructions on
how to use the components in the kit correctly and
instruct the user to perform essential testing before
applying anything to the hair.
Advantages
of Home Colour Kits :
- They are very cheap - a great
attraction during a recession.
- Because they are cheap you can
experiment with your look at low cost.
- Get your hair coloured at a time
to suit you - no waiting for a Salon Appointment.
- There are now a range of colours
available from a range of manufacturers.
- Available at your local
supermarket - buy it as part of your weekly shop.
- The kit contains everything you
need, including instructions.
- Some manufacturers have local
representatives who can demonstrate or advise on
their products.
- You can do other household chores
at home while the colour processes.
Disadvantages
of Home Colour Kits :
- You are on your own with no
Professional help in the room.
- The results are entirely dependent
upon your practical skills.
- You must follow the instructions
carefully - especially the pre-testing for
allergic reaction.
- If it all goes wrong, getting a
hairdresser to rectify it could prove expensive.
- You must know how often to apply
colour to avoid damaging your hair with over-processing.
- When new hair growth appears in
your natural colour it must be coloured with
another kit to match the rest without over-processing
the ends.
- Depending on your natural colour
the resultant colour may not be what you expect.
In the worst case, your hair may turn green,
yellow, brown or orange.
- The metallic salts present in the
colour will react with Salon colour components so
you might not be able to have a salon colour
until it has all grown out.
- You need to work methodically to
avoid making a mess of your home and possessions.
.
So Why
Choose A Salon Colour :
Many people prefer to
have their colour applied by a Professional, either to
avoid having to do it themselves or because they are not
good at doing their own hair.
Advantages
of Salon Colours :
.
- You receive a Professional service,
including safe pre-testing.
- Salons use colour products
designed for use by qualified & experienced
Stylists.
- Qualified Stylists are trained
with colour products to create an infinite range
of colour tones.
Disadvantages of Salon Colours :
.
- Salon treatments are much more
expensive - seek out offers like our E-Deals.
- The higher prices means you can't
afford to have your hair coloured as often as you
would like.
- You need to pre-book an
appointment which may be inconvenient to plan or
attend.
- You may need to take time off work
to attend an appointment - look for late opening
times.
