Stress Management

This Month - What Is Stress ?

We all get it.

It affects us all in different ways. What stresses one person isn't stressful to another.

It is contageous - we spread our stress to those around us.

Nobody is immune from stress and nobody is born with the ability to cope with it.

So what is stress ?

There are many dictionary definitions but here is our definition.
Stress is the difference between our Ability to Cope and the Demands of Life.
While our ability to cope is greater than the demands life puts upon us then our stress level is POSITIVE and we are able to take life in our stride. As the demands on us grow, or our ability to cope is reduced by illness or tiredness, then our stress level increases. When we are unable to cope our stress level is NEGATIVE.
Negative stress can be handled for a short time but prolonged or extreme negative stress is harmful to health.
We all need positive stress in our lives. If we had no stress we would have no ambition or drive to achieve anything. Our lives would lack purpose.
We encourage manageable stress when we take part in sports or other competitive passtimes or even follow a team or individual. Anything with a challenge to beat the odds or do better than somebody else, or even better our own previous score results in stress. Only when we become angry or frustrated at our performance does the stress level rise to unacceptable proportions.

What causes stress?
Anything can cause stress. It is unique to each person.

Signs & Symptoms.
These will be discussed in detail in the next issue.

Coping with Stress.
In extreme cases or for prolonged stress always consult a Doctor for expert help.
Everyday stress can be managed by getting our lives in a healthy state of balance between work, rest and play, and by attention to our breathing, exercise, diet and sleep. These basics can contribute to a healthy, balanced lifestyle where stress is under control.

We shall tackle these issues in future issues of our on-line magazine and in our Blogs, Tweets and Facebook postings.
